She would go all day without food and water until halftime, when the sun set. So during this year's observance, playing a pickup game of basketball with a youth team organized through her mosque seemed to be no big deal."If I weren't fasting, I'd feel like I'd probably miss more shots because I'm out of sync," Turner says.Muslims in the United States face special challenges in celebrating their holy month, which this year began Sept. 23 and ends Oct. 22. While Muslims in the Islamic world revive the daily rhythms of Ramadan - streets empty at sunset, families congregating for Ramadan dinners, or iftars, and later heading to the markets to drink tea until the wee hours of the morning, comfortable in the knowledge that they can sleep late because others will, too - Muslim-Americans have to adjust Ramadan to the beat of American life.In the process, they're creating Ramadan traditions with a distinctly American flavor - whether it's fasting in the heat of competition, eating takeout for iftar, or breaking fast with Christians and Jews."The Muslim experience in America is one of trying to conform to the way society around us runs," says Shahed Amanullah, who runs zabihah.com, an online guide of restaurants that conform to Islamic dietary restrictions. "In a Muslim country, everybody breaks their fast at the same time, so business conforms to that. But in America, we have to conform to a different schedule."Omar Ahmad, for example, a technology worker in Silicon Valley, is often still at work at sunset. So he drives to the nearby Yaseen Center mosque in Belmont, where iftar is served, and gets his meal to go. He eats it at his office - a ritual performed by dozens of Muslims who work in Silicon Valley."That's when you can tell who all the bachelors are," he jokes, adding that mosque officials don't mind the eat-and-run.Saira Sufi grew up in Topeka, Kan., accustomed to home-cooked iftars with family, but had little trouble adjusting to breaking her fast when she took a job on Capitol Hill, mainly because she could share the experience with Muslim colleagues. But since taking a job two years ago with the Civil War Preservation Trust, where she is the only Muslim, Sufi confesses to missing the sense of community. "I love breaking fast with other Muslims, but if you can't, you just accept it."Rather than lamenting, however, Sufi has turned her solitude into an opportunity to contemplate God - another practice encouraged during Ramadan. "When you're on your own, you reflect a little more," she says. While Muslim-Americans like Sufi have adjusted Ramadan to American life, more Americans have also become increasingly aware of Ramadan, and have sought to accommodate Muslims. For example, at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., the prayer hall stays open late to accommodate students praying Taraweeh, special prayers performed only during Ramadan. And many employers are letting Muslim employees slip out at sunset so they can break their fast. Many Muslim-Americans, meanwhile, are using Ramadan as a chance to reach out to the larger community. Since the 1990s, Sufi's father, Ashraf Sufi, has frequently invited non-Muslim neighbors to his home for iftar. After the 9/11 attacks, the need for interfaith dialogue became more urgent, and Dr. Sufi and his colleagues expanded the iftars through the Islamic Center of Topeka. The interfaith iftars have since become "like a tradition," Sufi says, drawing about 70 people, including Jews, Christians, Buddhists, and Bahais."If you don't meet people, you stay in your own shell, and that just breeds suspicion," he says.Indeed, according to the "Fatwa Bank" at IslamOnline.net, a conservative Web site, Muslims are encouraged to share iftar with non-Muslims. In response to a question from Pakistan, the Fatwa Bank said: "It is an intelligent and impressive idea to organize iftar with non-Muslims."Along with diversity, the nation's penchants for volunteering and technology have also influenced the way Muslim-Americans observe Ramadan. For example, Nabila Mango, a San Francisco social worker, says the annual iftar she has organized for the past six years for the city's Tenderloin district, draws some 100 volunteers. "The volunteers are really a picture of the Bay area: Muslims, Jews, Christians, straight, gay, everybody," Mango says. And Omar Mozaffar, an Islamic studies student at the University of Chicago, has taken up blogging to reflect on the meaning of Ramadan. It also helps overcome a typically American dilemma: "In our society, Muslim or not, we are alienated from each other, and blogging helps people connect and share ideas," he says.Jamil Abdullah, who coaches a basketball team sponsored by Masjid Al-Quran, a Boston mosque, believes Ramadan in America is too diverse to be labeled an American Ramadan."I wouldn't say it's our own unique Ramadan. I would say everybody's Ramadan is unique," he says. "There's not this Ramadan, or that Ramadan. It's just Ramadan, your Ramadan."
Source : IslamiCity.com by: Omar Sacirbey

New York Film Acadmey

So I’m @ the New York film academy in Orlando Disney – MGM studios, were the weather here is extremely HOT & humid … Not comparing it to Saudi Arabia ;)

Anyway the course here is “good” they are teaching us Filmmaking on 16mm films … which are similar to the 35mm films used in Hollywood Movies.
We have been learning lighting measures, measures between actors & cameras, How to use different angles, lot’s lot’s of things related to filming … Also they have been teaching us editing on Final cut pro, Which is an editing tool used on MAC computers.

Actually the course let’s us Film two projects, the first one is a Continuity Film & the other is a Montage Film “Which you make small clips & match them together”

Most of the students who come here are from the states, and most of them are in film schools already or are going to join one.

But eventually the course gives you a taste of Filmmaking & what’s behind the sense.

I really thought that Disney is a place for kids … But it is really a Magical place even for adults … They have well resorts & places to go around.

We are @ a place called Port Orleans Resort River Side which is a nice bush garden if I can say . Well in the beginning it was lots of fun … getting to now new people from different places, new ideas, and different types of thinking … Yes it’s a new experience.
The blog also increased my Writing in English, Which also I see important for a second language… (I need to work more on that).
Also I really had some goals by viewing my pictures … And having people make comments on them & sharing some thoughts.
@ The end I same a bit lazy. Also my work took most of my time, which made me not post as usual …

Anyway for people who have the time … Why not it’s great ... talking about your interests & having communications , Where you will find lot’s of people which have the same interests.
You don’t now maybe some day something will click

Regards

New Look ...

Will Maybe Blue represent's Mobily, Al-Hilal and the Sky ... Finally all of us were under our CEO the Grandfather “Hathloul” :)
Company bull shit guys … BEWARE

Mina Tragedy & Pilgrims Education:

We all feel sorry for what happened in Mina this year … the death toll of this tragedy has reached across 360 According to Arab News today … Believe me If any of you have been in Hajj you will not imagine these crowds until you see them by your self … and also you will not imagine the tremendous amount of work & effort the Saudi forces are doing to prevent such tragedies … SO WERE IS THE PROBLEM ?
Many people are blaming the Kingdom that they are not doing enough to prevent such tragedies …

Will in my opinion 90 % of them have not been to hajj to see what effort has been done!!!

I have been to Hajj before two years and in my opinion THE BIG PROBLEM is from the pilgrims them self’s …

Especially from pilgrims who are not educated to perform Hajj …

Hajj education should be mandatory on all pilgrims especially pilgrims from out side the Kingdom … there should be some kind of coordination between the Kingdom and our embassies regarding this matter … And they should focus on some African countries and countries from east Asia that most of the time come in groups and crush anybody on there way …

I see that Hajj goes threw 3 critical phases that most causes crowding:
1) going from Arafat to Muzdalifa after sunset on the 9’th of Dul Hijjah … Most of the crowding here is caused by buses trying to go out as fast as they can … forces & Hajj organizers are really risking there life’s in front of buses to organize the bus flows … If I can say this … most Bus drivers are crazy … it’s like the formula one … you just put your hand on your heart until your there … but once you are out of Arafat Bus parking every thing will go fine.

2) The crowed Caused when throwing the stones at Al-jamarat
On the 12’th of Dul Hijjah … the problem here is that 70% of the pilgrims are throwing at this day which saying more than 1 Million and a half … Keep in mind that they have another option to through from tomorrow … So we should go back to the education problem… Also one of the critical problems on throwing in Al-Jamarat Days is the people laying beside the Jamarat … They make a big miss … people go threw lines between Families with there children laying down … There should be a solution for this problem and it should be fast … I believe the main problem for the stampede that happen this year was because these people who are laying down with there luggage.

3) the crowed caused in Makkah in Al-Haram when finishing the Hajj … there are 3 floors in Al-Haram which can widely carry up to 2 Million people, But also here you can see mistakes of people taking the first floor … were than can see before going in that it is filled up !!! Anyway most of the times AL-Harm goes well because people are going in one direction.

I’m not trying to scar you hear NOT AT ALL … Hajj is a thing that you will never forget in your hole life … You just feel inside your heart always that every thing will be O.K under the care of Allah … So any body not done his Hajj yet, be ready for next year … It’s a journey that you will not forget … honestly I have never felt such joyful in my life …
It’s not something strange that problems happen with more than 2 Million people hitting the same place in 5 days.

Something Useful to do in Riyadh:

Really … I’m from the people who suffer to find something useful to do in Riyadh beside my work … Believe me never ever have your holidays in Riyadh it’s just something miserable … Anyhow I’m prod to announce that it’s time to break some sugars ladies & gentlemen … It’s (Sharee3 Al-Mushat) in King Abdullah Road … We Just Do Not Walk …
We are a Fat, Diabetic, High Blood pressure, Sick people
… No wonder that we take a 500 meter trip threw our BMW or our Hilux … We need to Walk Walk & Walk … So (Sharee3 Al-Mushat) is one of the best place’s to do that … The trees & flowers made on the Walk side gives you pure Oxygen and a fabulous Seeing … And the weather these days is nice in daylight … you will not Now that it is good until you try it … SO Get out there for God’s sake and be healthy …

The Tenth of Thulhejjah

Pull & Mobily Jeddah. Don’t Ask me about the score “Tefasheel”.
It was really good to have a change … We had The Match on Wednesday night
We had dinner at “Al-Bake” for sure.
Thursday Morning Dunkin Donuts as Usual … Rest of the day at the beach... lunch at Applebee’s … Then we went to this Coffee place called “Al-Jazeerah Al-‘7’9raa”
At the night we finished some things … Then had a look at “Ta7lieah” Street.
Will That was it …

But the really disappointing thing about Jeddah it’s the airport, it should be way better...

fOr Crying Out load “Make a new one”.

They really should but in mind that this is the destination of all Muslims from all over the world. When pilgrims come to Hajj, It’s very important to give them an imprison of how Saudi Arabia is taking care of Muslims in a proper way.

The kingdom is doing a huge job for taking care of pilgrims, but I am sure many of you guys have visited many countries … and visited many places there … but believe me you’ll never forget the Airport… Name it guys:

Heathrow, Dubai, Singapore, Denver… (Jeddah !!!) “I don’t think so”
I really hope that we have a cute airport in our lovely city of Jeddah, that we can be proud of.

<br
